Producer and Writer Shane Boris, fresh off his Academy Award win for 2022 Doc10 selection NAVALNY, is the recipient of the 2023 Vanguard Award, created to honor documentary producers and filmmakers who are at the forefront of creating and cultivating innovative and important documentary filmmaking. From FIRE OF LOVE, another Doc10 2022 film, to KING COAL, a Doc10 2023 selection, Shane’s films push the boundaries of conventional form in order to tell timeless and cinematic stories.
The Luminary Award celebrates members of the documentary film community who help to make powerful films that shine a light on vital social issues. This year’s Luminary Award will be presented to Jean Tsien. A powerful force in the nonfiction industry for four decades, Tsien has worked as an editor, story consultant, producer, and executive producer across a wide range of acclaimed films (Scottsboro: An American Tragedy, Dixie Chicks: Shut Up & Sing, Miss Sharon Jones!, Plastic China) and remains devoted to nurturing emerging talent, serving as an advisor at the Sundance Institute Edit and Story Lab, Camden/TFI Retreat, Catapult/True False Rough Cut Retreat, and Chicken & Egg Pictures (Egg)celerator Lab, among many others.
